I remember it well: my first 'proper' job after children and I was a nervous wreck the night before, panicking about whether I'd know where to get off the bus and find it again to come home!

On your first day in any new job you should be shown:
    • where the fire exits are and what to do if the building has to be evacuated
    • where the toilets are
    • where to hang your coat
And if you're not told about the following, ASK!
    • arrangements for lunch break
    • tea and coffee arrangements
    • cigarette breaks (if relevant)
    • where to keep your bag
As for the actual job, I'd expect to be introduced to my line manager, any colleagues I was working with / needed to know, and shown what to do. There should be a check that your chair, desk and monitor can be adjusted to suit you, and if there isn't a supply of necessary stationery on your desk ask about that too!

Smile as much as you can, especially at any reception staff and your immediate team. Good luck.

  • I'm starting a new job tomorrow as well and I'm bricking it. Mainly because I do know what to expect but I've been unemployed for far too long and am worrying that I've completely lost the ability to think properly.

OP: the usual procedure on a first day is some form of induction stuff but it depends on the size of the company as to how lengthy it might be. If you've not worked in an office before I expect they will have some work-shadow/training sorted for you in the first instance. Few employers just show you your desk and expect you to get on with things on your own. Which is possibly what I'll be getting tomorrow morning. EEK!

I'd expect to be shown my desk and given a login (probably not my own as it wasn't set up in time), then shown which network drives are used, where the coffee/loos are, then crack on with doing the job.

    PN - contractor..?

Permies will probably spend most of the first day (at least) reading and signing all sorts of policies and reading stuff.

I can now respond to this as I am starting a new job on Monday ... and I'll be turning up, sitting down, logging in and doing the job.

No policies to sign, nothing to read.

I work in small companies... proper small (1-20 employees). None of that malarky, you're there to work!

    :)
