AEG Lavatherm dead after two years..

Hello..

In Aug 2010 a friend bought an AEG Lavatherm model 56840L condenser drier. She paid quite a bit of money for it as it was her view that it was a higher quality appliance. In addition ,there are no children at home and so the drier has performed far fewer cycles than would be the case in a family home and has had lighter use.

I suspect a pcb issue as the display is dead and there are no signs of life.

The initial John Lewis warranty was for two years so only just expired.
I have written an initial email to JL and await their reply.

I am not convinced that AEG appliances are of the quality they once were.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

How do you know it is a fault and not pilot error? If you want to chase this under SOGA you will need a report to say it had an inherent fault. But it might just be a belt or damage caused by items in the machine.

OP, do the simple things first.
Have you checked the fuse in the plug?

Hi peeps..yes i have thoroughly checked it. I always say that the best washers are the ones with two knobs on..the programmer knob and the temp knob. As for driers I'd say the same,a couple of knobs and no digital displays. Sadly this one has a digital display and an array of buttons and linked to a pcb.

If JL and/or AEG are not helpful i intend to drive it all the way. I think its appalling to spend close on £400 on a drier and only use it perhaps twice a week for most of the year excluding summer/good drying days for 24 months, and then have it die on you..

Latest update, on checking it was found that the drier hadnt been purchased from John Lewis,it was from Boots appliances on line website.

The appliance owner phoned AEG who duly noted that the one year warranty had expired and sold a D&G repair policy to her ! The cost of the warranty was an outrageous £167 per year but with a promise that they would fix the machine at no extra cost.

Man appeared and as i suspected, diagnosed duff control PCB. went away, came back a few days later and fitted said bit..now working..how long for though?

The cost of the part on line is £149..again a ripoff for a pcb. I have the PCB and engineers reports.

There are no visible issues with the pcb though it is surface mount technology but with three relays.

Though i do not have any direct remedy with AEG i have nevertheless made my initial approach to them since it was they who sold the rip off policy and it was they who produced this fine piece of "German" Engineering which has failed prematurely. Updates to follow..

Couple of things, why did you not advise your friend to approach the retailer for a remedy under the SOGA. Also, AEG hasn't been "German" for a long time, the owner's of the name are Electrolux and the machines are produced in Italy, and are quite often rebadged Electrolux or Zanussi models with some cosmetic differences.

What are you hoping to get from this? I'll doubt the manufacturer would want to even deal with you given that your not the consumer in this instance.

My thoughts exactly. OP has no contract with AEG or Boots - the "friend" has such rights under SOGA against Boots (not AEG).

Yes i am fully aware of the SOGA and my remedies and i am also aware that AEG have not existed for years and that it is merely used as a high end branding tool to sell overpriced appliances !

The "friend" was advised but nevertheless acted as stated so its now a rescue mission to try and extract some value from the debacle.

YOU have NO remedies - that's the point being made. ;)

But respect for being a caring friend. :)

I clearly do have remedies under SOGA with the retailer and that will be the eventual target. I am merely inviting AEG Electrolux of Luton to comment at this stage.
