I am filing this on line for DH who is self employed kitchen and bathroom fitter
a couple of questions, i have all his recepts for diesel for his van, can i allow all of these as business expense or is there a set % ammount to adjust by?
his van is solely for work, (except for the rare trip to the tip 1 - 2 x a year if i am lucky and nag him enough) same goes for his mobile he has a contract on a fixed monthly amount set mins etc, its impossible to say what was business and what personal again is there a % figure to use as a rule?
also is there a list of allowable and dis allowable expenses, looking at SE online it asks to list both, i do not really understand why, if they are disallowable why list them?? i just dont include them in the allowable.
thanks

If the van is for business purposes only, the you can claim all of the fuel. With the phone, you will have to decide what %age is private and what is business, and show the business useage as an expense

Don't bother with the disallowable- this is for those with much more complicated business accounts
thanks
Hope this has helped0 -
Allowable and disallowable... when including business expenses ,for instance the mobile phone, say the total amount for the year is £500 you put that in the allowable column, but then if you estimate that 20% is for private use you would put £100 in the dis-allowable column. This way shows that you have assessed your figures for private use.
Malcindebt's method is fine too0 -
I would say it is better to put in the total cost and then the disallowed amount, if nothing else, just to show to the tax inspector that "some" of the cost is disallowed - i.e. that you've thought about it. If you don't put anything in the disallowed column, a tax inspector "may" think that you are trying to claim business and private proportions and may think it worth his while to start a formal enquiry into your books. Alternatively, you can make a note in the "additional information" box, to say that you've only claimed the business proportion which is why there are no entries in the disallowed box.
Just to clarify, the "disallowed" column is the proportion of the total in the "expenses" column, so what you are actually claiming for is the "total" box less the "disallowed" box, to give you the business proportion.0
