According to this report in The Register smart meters are not mandatory.
"While smart metering brings significant benefits, it will not be an offence for householders to refuse to accept a smart meter and we have made it clear that we do not expect suppliers to seek an entry warrant simply to fit smart metering equipment."

I question what the position is if you have to have your metre changed as it's out of date.
Do you then have a choice?0 -

Do you then have a choice?, but I resisted having it replaced for years, partly because I didn't want a smart meter. Eventually I had to relent, but when the SSE electrician turned up last month, he had a non-smart meter with him! Actually I'm quite disappointed with it because it only records whole kWhs whereas the old one recorded to the hundredth. The economy 7 mechanical timer was also taken out. It was made in Bath by the Horstman Gear Co. I think; it was only 16 minutes out after 30 years!

When smart meters are rolled out along with a house monitor you do not have to have one. Remember we will all be paying for it, installed or not through our energy bills. The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0
