Worrying letter from hm revenue

Hi really could do with some advice I feel physically sick over it!

My partner recieved a letter today sayin he owes £2992 in tax, I can't stop worrying! His employer has been taking tax out of his wages each month (he works for a small building company).

As far as we were both aware his employed has been paying the tax as the money has been taken out of his wages each month.

But I closer inspection they've got his income wrong, they've got his income down as £34,162 for 2011-2012 when infact all he earnt was £11,400

Does this mean I can stop worrying I've been crying all morning:(.

I'd even go as far as saying I think he's been paying to much tax on the wages for last year.

Thankyou in advance x

Im not a tax expert but I would say they've got the numbers totally wrong, why doesn't he give them a ring, it might be something that can be sorted out quickly.

In fact if it that high, i would suggest they owe him oney, if he's been paying a lot of tax.

First thing to do, as suggested, is call HMRC and find out how the bill has arisen - what numbers it's based on and why they think the money's owed.

Second, copy this post onto the 'Cutting Tax' boards - there's loads of brilliant tax experts there who can advise on HMRC problems. This board is for tax credits, rather than actual tax, if you see what I mean.

He spoke to his employer who said he reckons he knows where they've gone wrong. Last year my other half took paternity leave when our little girl was born, when is boss put the figures in it failed the first 2 times so he put in his wages again. So the third time 3 lots of £11,000 had been entered!

So he entered 33,000 instead of 11,000!

He's on to them now to sort it.

My mums just informed me that on his wage he should be paying £85 a month tax but they've been taking more.

Are tax and national insurance classed as the same thing when it comes to deductions? X

~Tax and NI payments are completely seperate entities

You pay tax on any earnings over £8105 per year.

You pay 12.5% on anything over, i think the amount is around about £150 per week,

Hope things sort themselves out soon, so stop worrrying.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • It's obviously just an administrative cockup, don't worry yourself.
