Company Van and fuel???

Hi, Im hoping someone can help...

My husband has a company van that he uses to commute home aswell. This was agreed with the directors and he keeps mileage records.

They have started been funny with him about fuel receipts. They want fuel reciepts for the fuel that he will have put in for commuting.

Im from an accounting back ground and im not sure he has to give reciepts in as this was paid out from our account and they should not be able to claim VAT back.

Does he need to leagally give the receipts to them or is the agreement and mileage records enough?

Hopefully someone can advise....

Thank you

Gemma

Perhaps this has nothing to do with them re-claiming VAT, they may simply be questioning his integrity. Easiest way of maintaining his standing is to show sight of his fuel receipts.

  • No he is not paying tax on the van...

Problem is not sure he was keeping the receipts as it was not mentioned at the time...

    Thanks
  • He probably should be paying tax on it - so just watch out that he doesn't get hit at a later date. Driving home is considered private use.

You should have advised him to ensure any potential tax liability was met and keeping receipts is basic houskeeping.

As long as he's only using the van for business use and commutting (even an insignificant amount of private use), there is no tax charge applicable.

If he's going to the shops every night, or using it to run the kids around, or any other significant amount of private use then there should be a tax charge.
