So if you hadn't requested to purchase it the card would have been for sale again and you would have just lost £10.
If the card had just been put back into stock the sale would have been registered in exaclty the same way but someone other than you would have bought it. If the reason you had to buy it was because this couldn't happen - you just proved that it could.
Sounds like the Manager was just being a 'very silly person' - how come your Supervisor didn't stick up for you and explain the stupidity of all this I wonder. Certainly you should complain above his head if you can - but be warned he will probably be on your case for ever after if you do, if this example of his character is anything to go by. If you want to stay working there it might be better to go the ebay option and always refer the customer directly to the Manager in future - for every little piddly thing - keep him really busy why don't you.
