I work to how my MrT's is laid out

I have printed lists I tailored to what we use then laminated them and stuck them on the fridge with a fridge magnet strip.
I'm sure I have a few links for food storage/larder lists will see if I can find them then you can add and tweak as needed..I'm no help with a computer type list though I'm totally useless at that sort of thingalthough I think one of my links is an excel thingy will go look and edit this post
This used to be available online for free so may be worth a search by the authors name http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Modern-Kitchen-Pantry-ebook/dp/B0057XSCPK
http://www.grocerylists.org/ultimatest/ this site is a great starting point..
This link (although its a prepping/food storage site) has a ready made list that you can tweak

I suppose the re-writing issue depends on whether you repeatedly buy the same items or not.
I only do a list for my freezer and then write a meal plan for the week around what we have. We tend to have lots of common purchases month to month (chicken breasts, steak, pork chops, ice cream etc) so for me, a written list on the fridge or a clipboard with a column for location and quantity works fine. I have it typed up and print one off when I start. Cross off and add as time goes on (using the same columns) and when it gets too messy after a few months, print another off.
As for how I note it, we have two freezers so any item gets listed once and then any location added with a simple coding system. F1 is top freezer drawer, F2 is second drawer etc. It works for us.
I don't bother with an inventory of my cupboards as we don't have much space and everything is there to see anyway. I do rotate my stock though - I'm often teased for my 'facing up' thanks to a stint as a shelf stacker while at college :rotfl:
