Veet was good, but what next ?

The house we have just moved into has DISGUSTING basins. The little round grid things which stop your rings going down the plughole were black and hairy in all 3 basins. There's a wonderful thread on here about what to do if you can't pull the hair out, and I have to say that Veet worked - hoorah ! But the little griddy things themselves determinedly remain black (they were black under the hair anyway). I have tried all commercially-available substances known to woman (or man) and I can't get them back to the clean-looking silvery appearance they should have. Bicarb, soda crystals Buster products, Shiny Sinks, Vim, vinegar, brillo pads, boiling water, elbow grease - and more - have all failed. Any ideas as to how to get them silvery again ?

Have you tried Bar Keepers Friend by any chance. I've always found that to be pretty good.

If the chrome plating has been damaged then they will not 'clean up' and return to the silver finish that you crave :(
  • Hi, have you tried WD40?

To be honest, I'd be tempted to just replace them. It sounds like they are damaged or seriously stained rather than simply dirty, and by the time you have paid for all those cleaning products you could probably have nipped out to B&Q/Homebase etc and bought new ones!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
