Patatas Bravas - frying oil?

Hi,

Hope someone can assure me that I am doing the right thing..
I am going to make patatas bravas and I was going to fry the potatoes in my deep fat fryer which is filled with vegetable oil (do it twice, like when you make chips).
Now just checked the recipes online and every single one fries potatoes in olive oil... now this is for dinner party so I am doing larger amount, if I shallow fry it in olive oil I will be doing it all night and if I deep fry it in olive oil I'll spend fortune on olive oil!

Do you think anyone will notice the difference if I fry it in vegetable oil??

Thank you

It won't make any difference really. I always fry them in veg oil as olive oil is much too expensive! Just make sure they are nice and crisp. Wishing you a smashing dinner party!

It will be the same dont worry. When doing a large amount I part boil the potaoes first then cut into cubes and roast them in the oven like mini roast potatoes. (says she who has cooked this recipe all of three times):rotfl: but they taste great.

Just to point out olive oil isn't suitable for deep frying anyway as it has a lower boiling point than veg oil & will burn quicker.

Thee BBC food recipe roasts the cubed spuds in 2 tbsp olive oil (40-50 minutes, 200C/gas 6/fan oven 180C).
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

Thank you all, glad to be assured!
Doing it tomorrow tonight, so fingers crossed. I've never actually done them before!

We make patatas bravas frequently, as it's become a real favourite at our monthly church lunches. We always roast the potato cubes in olive oil in the oven. It'll all turn out the same in the end! Hope the dinner party goes really well.
