Shops only have to exchange or refund if the goods are faulty. Any other offerings are purely goodwill.

When you buy something it has to last for a reasonable amount of time, which is of course relative. Could be 14 days, could be 28 days, could be three months.

  • Suzey is quite correct, refunds and exchanges on non-faulty goods are offered as a way of encouraging further custom.

If goods are faulty, or are not fit for purpose then refunds can be requested. This is a complex area of the law, as it has to do with reasonable use; after a certain period, a repair can be offered. For example, if you bought a hot-water bottle, and it began to leak after a week of snuggling it it bed, you could return this and ask for a refund, as it was not 'fit for purpose' because one would expect it to last longer ( a repair would not be viable). However, if it was being used as part of a greenhouse watering system and it failed, the retailer would be within their rights to refuse a refund or exchange, as this is not the item's intended purpose.

Both are right. They each have different return policies (I'm assuming they were different shops not both branches of Connaught House) and both policies are completely within the law. As said before refunds are only mandatory by law of faulty products and if you had bought via mail order/internet as you need an inspection period but that I think is 7 days only. It is a shame you weren't made aware of the policy when you bought the items but in the second shop you did ask so you are learning.

er because he is talking about SHOPS not web sites. shop policies on return are likely to differ form a web site.
the op was comparing 2 shops not shop and web site.
