Alternative to coffee for a tiramisu?

I really dislike coffee (even a little bit makes me nauseous). At some point in the past I have made a version of tiramisu using something else instead of coffee but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was. Has anyone used something else successfully?
I was thinking of maybe an orange syrup (choc orange version). Would it work?

I cannot see why it wouldn't work.
It will not be "tiramisu" obviously, as the taste of coffee is important in tiramisu, but it will be very delicious dessert. I bet the cocoa on top & the mascarpone will go really well with the orange.
You can give it your own name!

Also Google reveals some people use Baileys, cherry or rum & chocolate mixture..

I might try it with Baileys myself!

I've made a strawberry version before. Was very lovely (as long as you weren't expecting coffee LOL)

What a coincidence, I was thinking about this earlier. I do like the coffee version, but on rooting around, I have found some of the finger biscuits, plus a can of the caramel stuff, and I wondered if I could use these in a tiramisu type thing. Perhaps a banoffee one.

Am loving the baileys suggestion... Maybe caramel baileys. Or mint baileys with a chocolate topping? Ooooh so many options. I'll have to put mascarpone on my list I think.

  • I've seen a lemon tiramisu in the shops so that might work? You can buy lemon liquers, and at the mo there's one for sale in @ldi that's very reasonably priced. Other than that I'd go for cherry as has been suggested already.
  • Nigella has a tiramisu recipe made with Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur). Very nice if you have a bottle lurking in the cupboard.
  • My partner says Caro (from Ikea) or Barley Cup (but apparently that tastes like coffee)

I use frangelico, or a walnut liquor, sometimes with the coffee. Or ameretto.

If alcohol is ok, I would go with just alcohol. The limoncello, frangelico or baileys suggestions. I love rum too, but I think it needs something with a little depth or bitter/sourness (like nuts or lemon) to balance the sort of 'gooeyness' with an edge. Personally I dislike over sweetened versions, and with the caramel would something to tone that right down.

Because the beauty is in the flavour change within that similar unctuous texture through the whole dish, I do thing you need edge and flavour with bite! But there is no reason you cannot make a coffee free take on this delicious texture.

It will probably have to be alcohol free as my son wants to make it as part of his Food Tech project at school (not sure they would be happy about him taking a bucket load of baileys (or similar) to school, except maybe to confiscate to brighten up their tea break lol).

I like experimenting in the kitchen!! I suppose tiramisu could be regarded as an italian trifle and there are lots of different ways of making a trifle!:rotfl:

Well, why not look at Italian trifle? Whoch is called zuppa inglese. (English soup). It might be an intersting look at our trifle from an Italian perspective?
