This is one of the reasons why I think accounting degrees are a terrible route in. You are part qualified, but not actually qualified enough (or experienced enough) to be taken on for lower level work even. AAT is better as then you are a qualified bookkeeper on your way up, so can find that type of work and continue studying in your own time, and build up good experience on the way.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
  • We did have a work experience 6th former with us this year who was applying for a post - A Level training scheme that would take her into ACA. They were expected to get top grades and then go through a couple of intensive assessments and interviews. I think she said that there were 6 places a year nationally with this large firm.

  • We are shortly going to be recruiting an apprentice with a Veiw to supporting them/paying for AAT. You could look for a similar opportunity and work your way up. I've just started doing a degree in Payroll Management, I'm not going to lie, it's hard work studying, working and raising a child, but I hope it will be worth it :-)

Are they going to be an accountancy apprentice? if they are then AAT will be both the technical certificate (taught element) and the equivalent of the NVQ (assessed element). They combine for Accountancy so they only have to do the one qualification.
  • I have just qualified as AAT level 2 & I had to study a lot more than everyone else. problem is I now need experience to go with it, but won't be able to get an apprenticeship as I am 56 & unless I am willing to go for work for free it is not going to happen. I am not in a position to go for level 3. What do I do next?

No upper age limit on apprenticeships by the way. Only limited to the employers who will take you on.

Are you employed at the moment?
