There are organisations dedicated to helping people, with exactly the type of problem you describe, get back to work.

One example is the Richmond Fellowship. I would suggest you see if they have an office near you and make contact.

Another possibility, although it doesn't immediately help with with finance, it to start with a small amount of voluntary work and build up from there. This will give you companies to list as references when you apply for paid work.
  • well, your post is clear, concise and tells us the whole story so your communication skills seem OK (sorry, genuine comment hope it doesn't sound patronising).

Can you and yr partner make a list of other skills you have and all the experience you have from previous jobs (or just from "life").? It's easy for me to say, but don't underestimate yourself and your abilities.

Volunteering is a good idea. What about a couple of hours a week in a charity shop - if you don't feel upto dealing with customers they always need people in that little back room to sort out the donations. You would meet people in a work environment without the pressure.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. xxx
  • Could you write yourself a list of your strengths and weaknesses, and work out from there what would best suit you? What are your interests and hobbies? Is there anything you've always wanted to do?

Job satisfaction can fill you with confidence so I recommend doing something personally fulfilling. Hopefully, you can concentrate on the inspirational rather than anxiety. Speaking from personal experience. I hope you have fun :)
