Building society accounts

Have just spoken to a building society I banked with over 12 years ago having received a phone call at my mothers house asking me to call them. It seems they have an account in my maiden name which has a £2700 balance! This is completely out of the blue for me and they only thing I can think is that it is the balance of money I saved to go away to University at 18. The lady said I should have been sent regular statements but I see my mum daily and she has never received these at her address (the address which was registered as my home address back then). The lady at the building society also stated that the money was now in a dormant account and had been receiving no interest!
She said she is sending me all the paperwork and if it is all correct it will be a very nice little windfall! But surely I should have received statements and interest in the intervening 12 years, I am usually very careful with money so I am surprised I left this account with such a large balance.
Any advice would be gratefully received, am starting to think this may be some sort of practical joke!
