Camden plans council tax hike on empty second homes

No this is the only one. Not sure what point you're trying to make here?
My point has been made. Firstly, this 150% is worth nothing, as comparatively it doesn't even make it any more expensive than anyone else pays throughout the country for the average house.
Secondly, surely there is scope to re-adjust this.0 -
the average CT per dwelling in england is 1,201
the number for London Area is 1,203
the number for South West is 1,275
the figures are per dwelling; whether the 'dwellings' are comparable I've no idea0 -
Telford - 2nd homes? Having spent the last 5 years working there I fail to see how that could ever be thought of as 2nd home country?Telford council is planning the same 150 % for empty 2nd dwellings. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. The vast majority of councils are planning to utilise the surcharge in order to help offset the extra cost of council tax support and the budget cuts.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

BTW it tends to be neighbours who notify a property is empty especially if there is a vermin issue.
Also as most councils have empty homes officers, I can imagine they will now be having discussions with neighbours to confirm a property they thought was empty is actually being occupied. Though as lots of property in London are flats they are going to have difficult in lots of cases getting access into the building.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

as a matter of interest how do councils know a house is a second home (unless the owner tells them?)
They don't specifically without them being told or going digging - I'm sure that we'll be tightening up on information gathering and I'd expect that the regulations will allow for further checking (although the regs are quite good anyway if used properly).I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. Personally, I think we should have a "poll tax" based upon adults who live in the area and are eligible to vote. It's far more equitable to charge everyone who uses local services than just house owners.
It's a 'winner'. I'm convinced the entire population would see this as 100% sensible.....0 -

it's surprising no-one has thought of that before.

We were discussing the changes the other day and once you've seen the way people try and con the system as it is you can see straight away what sort of scams people are going to pull - I can pretty make a list now of people and companies I deal with who will try it on come April.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals.
