Very few private chains will offer no contract, they make their profits on the months that people pay but don't attend not on the regular as clockwork attendees. Pools are incredibly expensive to run between servicing (water must be tested several times a day as well as the plant room stuff), chemicals and electricity. There is nothing harsh about needing to plan your business expenditure around income. If there were no contracts private gyms would close for several months a year and staff would be unemployed.

Try your local council fitness centre, university, college, school or YMCA gym, these are all more likely to be more flexible. If you sign a legally binding contract stick it out, make no mistake private chains will hound you and destroy your credit rating. TBH if money is so tight you don't think you can afford the year you would be better with a more MSE exercise system like road running and home DVDs and setting some 'rainy day' savings aside.

I wasn't aware of that, how can private gyms destroy my credit rating ?
I have tried my local gym and as I mentioned earlier I am looking for gym and pool so that I can get the most out of it as I'm not much of a gym person so alternating will help me, I can afford but not 12months and the local gym only gives a 6 month contract which is simply too much; I understand the business issues that you have mentioned but the problem is this sort of long lasting contracts do them no good either.
For example, I can't afford to have a contract for 12months and therefore I won't go there;if I could get a 6 or preferebly 3months contract I would have definately joined them gym and I am 99% sure that there are many people out there in the same situation.
Wouldn't that be good for their business, having more people joining their centre, yeah they might have months where a very low percentage of people go there but there will be several months when they have a high percentage of members.

Check to see if you have a Pure Gym nearby - they're month-to-month contracts. Basic, but clean and open 24 hours a day.
  • I use the local council facilities where they have gym and pool and aerobics type classes and squash/badminton courts. You can either pay as you go, join and pay monthly or yearly (cheaper), join for just swimming or pay a joining fee then pay (less) as you go for just gym. Run by DC Leisure (I think) for the council - they run lots of council facilies around the country. Also they give discounts for certain professions including MOD and members can use other sports centres belonging to the same council - we have five small towns with centres we can use in our council area.

I am aware of puregym but it's only a gym, I'm looking for a centre that includes the pool as well.

yeah I have checked all the local council fitness centres in my area but unfortunately they only do 12 months contract which is very frustrating.

Don't they do just turn up and pay?
  • I am aware of Corporate Gyms doing a 12 month contract but local council gym's in my experience have always offered a pay as you go or a Monthly Direct Debit but that can be cancelled anytime. That said £28 for all perks seems very good value.

I don't know the prices but Fusion Gym offers casual memberships which might work out.

Their site says they have pools but may depend on branch. They are classed a charity, which might help.

Deru,I have checked the website but I am looking for fitness/leisure centres in or around manchester(close to it).

I found a few leisure centre with affordable price but it's so unfortunate that they have a 12 month contract. It would be nice if it was even a 3 or 6 months contract but 12 months is simply too much.
