Sewing Machine

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place but I was given a sewing machine and had great plans but there is a problem with the machine. It just will not feed the fabric through. I have taken it apart but can't see anything obviously wrong. Someone suggested it might have been switched to free hand embroidery but I have ruled that out. It is an old New Home XL - II (Janome). I have enquired at my local shop as to how much a service is but it is £70 (not including repairs )
It's a shame because it stitches well (perfect front and back) but it's an impossible task to constantly pull the fabric through :(
Has anyone any ideas how to fix the problem or where I can get it repaired cheaper?
Many thanks
I must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:

Are the feed dogs (the little ziggy-zaggy metal teeth under the presser foot) up or down below the level of the metal plate under the foot? If they don't rise above the plate with each stitch then they won't feed through. There will be a button somewhere with a symbol like MMMM or VVV on it somewhere, probably pressed in.

Gimme a moment and I'll see if I can find instructions....

Is the presser foot applying any pressure? It's usually adjusted by a screw or dial on the top, above the presser foot somewhere. The feed dogs drag the fabric through against the pressure of the foot; no pressure, no movement!

If the feed dogs should be up but aren't, on most machines there's a screw underneath them that fits into a slot on the dogs & a hole on the other side. You'd need to loosen the screw slightly, pull the dogs up a bit, then tighten it up again. Sometimes the screw just comes a little loose & allows the dogs to drop a bit, which would also cause the problem you have described. HTH!

I was going to ask, is the feed dog in the 'up' position? valk_scot beat me to it :D

My machine could do with being serviced but if it's likely to cost upwards of £70 it's going to have to wait a while

It's worth enquiring locally, as my wife had her machine serviced just last week.
Shop charged £30 plus parts (£9) and included 3 month warranty.
