Advice - Job Application Waiting Game!

Hi
I applied for a job I was interested in by email on Thursday 20th September. I received a response about 30 minutes later from the manager thanking me for my application and stating that he would be in touch "shortly" to arrange for me to go in for a "discussion about the role".
Just wondered if people had any advice on my next move. I haven't heard anything since. Do you think he is unlikely to contact me? or are we still in the period he described as "shortly"?
Secondly, does anybody think I should email him at any point and have any tips on how to word it without sounding like I am saying what are you playing at?
Thanks for all your help in advance.

Maybe you can send a polite reminder email, but it depends on how many people have applied for the job and all the other things entailed in looking through and disregarding other cv's.0

Thanks scooby, the role wasn't well advertised so was hoping there wouldn't be too many applicants. Think I may leave it til Thursday, which will be 2 weeks then send an email. Just need to think how to word it now!0

I'd word it somewhere along the lines of:
'Further to your previous email, I wondered if you were able to give me an update on timescales' i.e. you're not making assumptions either way, but asking a reasonable question.
Good luck - it is horrible.0 -
Thanks Wyndham, it is definately horrible for applicants, the manager probably doesn't think anything of it but putting shortly is like a piece of string. If he had just wrote he'd be in touch next week then it would have been easier to contact him.0

Does it not say anything in the ad about when they will be interviewing people or aiming to get back to people? Feels a bit silly when they don't.
Wyndham's response sounds decent! People don't like to have pressure put on the so something light-weight would go down better, although there's a risk they won't reply!Saving £10,000 in 2013: £4491.48/£10,0000 -
Yes but shortly is not longer than two weeks and it may have been a standard email sent to everyone.
I would email now to ask for an update and if no response I'd leave it as I made a mistake of chasing someone twice and got a snotty email back.0
