I have worked in a variety of private sector companies, from huge to small, and in that time I have never come across a union, or anyone who belonged to a union.

How would you know though? I have private union membership but I don't have a tattoo on my forehead stating that this is the case. In fact, unless I had cause to attend a disciplinary or grievance hearing and you happened to be hearing it, there is no reason for work colleagues ever to know. It really annoys me when people think that because a union didn't canvass them in their workplace somehow it's someone else's fault they never joined one when they need it.

I would add that with the current employment laws, If an employer found that you were a union member, or were encouraging others to join a union, then you would be out the door ASAP

There are some that might try that of course. But I have my union's backing... one meeting tends to be enough that employers realise my union membership actually makes me one person who is not to be f****d with. Especially since employers are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of union membership and unions tend to go all-out to defend members who are discriminated against on this basis!

Of course, I don't use my union membership as a Get Out Of Jail Free card and I have no illusions as to what is a standard and reasonable business behaviour. OP, you must be on Mars if you think it is unreasonable for an employer to impose any of those requirements! Keeping your training up to date, accounting for how you spend your time and looking presentable are absolute basics for almost any employer - so good luck in the real world.

Oh, and you did sound racist, as well as spiteful and rather silly to boot.

I think that you need to explain yourself here, because these are nasty allegations.

This is pretty disgusting, but is reality.

    It is also illegal!

But any employer (particularly law firms) are not exactly going to broadcast the facts are they? They are always going to find easy ways around laws which fail to protect employees adequately.

Umm.. have you read the whole thread?

The OP does come across racist. Fact. Nobody needs to explain, read the first post.

I read the reply to me, the piece in inverted commas, which then made it sound as if the person was calling me a racist.

Sorry for any ambiguity, andygb, although I started by responding to your post, I then moved on to responding to the OP. I had thought that was clear, I do apologise if it wasn't.
