Lighter vs dark hair when damaged

As I've posted before, my hair is fine and damaged. For the past few months I've had blonde highlights (my hair is naturally dark and now going grey). My hairdresser was wary of putting the bleach on my hair with it being fragile but it turned out OK and I had it done again the next time. But, as always is the case when I have my hair lighter, it went more brittle and lost its shine and started breaking off. So then my hairdresser said it would be better to just have one colour until it gets in better condition so now I've gone dark again (like a rich chestnut brown).
People said the highlights suited me, especially my boyfriend who seems a bit miffed that I have gone darker again and can't seem to understand about the condition of my hair. I like the blonde myself but I really don't want to harm my anymore and it does look in better condition when its dark.
Any views?

Bleaching doesn't just destroy the melanin pigment, it also damages the protein structure. The darker you start, the lighter you go, more frequently or repeatedly you bleach the more the damage, so it's generally healthier to touch up the roots than go over the same hair with highlights. Assuming the brown is a semi permanent it won't damage your hair at all.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
