SERP`s

Does anyone know if there is a legitimate free way to claim if you were advised to contract out of serp`s back in the eighties?I was advised to do this by the "Man from the Pru"recently a financial advisor found out that i have a pension fund with them for around 17,000,and all thats gone in was the money from the SERPs,any ideas would be really helpful thanks.:D

  • The FSA did a general review of SERPS and contracting out about three or four years ago.

It found that in general it investors would have chosen to go Contract Out of SERPs if it was more than about 20 years until they reached State Retirement Age. As it is now more than 20 years since the 1980s that would seem to apply to you.

There was also a concern that it would not be in the best interests of somebody who was going to join a Pension Scheme that provided benefits in lieu of SERPS or on very low earnings but the size of your fund suggests this does not apply to you.
