Need a mattress and no idea where to start!

Options
I need some serious help with buying a mattress, have never done it before and I'm getting so confused with all the different types of spring and thickness and firmness!

From what I can gather so far, I'd be better off with a firm one, but I'm on a budget of about £150ish.

I've come close to buying a few but having looked at the reviews most say 'will be fine as a guest bed or for kids' but I'm looking for one to sleep on every night!

Does anyone know of any good sites or deals to get a relatively cheap, comfortable mattress for a double bed? Is this realistic or will I have to fork out £400 for a decent one or get a crappy one for less? Help!

I have no idea. May be going to local bed shop to try out?
  • Hello,

There's a chap on here call Tim Deegan who offers good mattress advice, and may well spot this thread soon. He also runs the website mattressadvice (what else would it be called!), so I'd imagine that would be a good place to start. He does warn that there are a lot of dodgy companies out there (even seemingly reputable ones) that overcharge on pretty average mattresses, so you'd be right to do your research.

Although he does admit that he also sells beds and mattresses on another site, he gives good advice and many people trust him. I bought a mattress off him a few years ago, it's still going strong now, so I can vouch for his advice and his store.

Appreciate this sounds like an advert for him, but I'm in no way affiliated! I'm back on the forum as I'm about to buy a bed, spotted this thread so thought I'd help out.

I'm too new (still!) to post links, but if you search 'which mattress mse' on google you'll see an old thread on here which gives lots of advice that is still relevant now.

    Good luck!

Of course Mr Deegan would warn of so many dodgy companies out there!!

He runs a mattress business and wants anyone business and so will slag off the competition. Some of it rightly so, but he slags off everyone!!

Yes your post sounds like an advert for him, Registered Aug 2008 and only 11 posts??????

I got one from mattressman online.

For my 12 yr old son so ordered medium.

Bit firm, should have got soft seeing he's light in weight.

Apart from that, seems good for the price.

    Signed, Mr. Matt Tresman.:D

    Joke!!

I think you need to lie on a mattress before you buy one, so agree that going along to local bed shop and trying them is the way to go.
My DD's both have beds from Ikea - and I have to say they are really comfortable and you can try them out in store. I don't know whether they just do mattresses though as they are not standard sizes. Might be worth a look if you live close to one.
