Boiling water on tap?

Options
Just seen an ad on TV for a system that provides boiling water on tap in the kitchen. 100 degrees actual boiling water, out of what looks like a normal kitchen mixer tap with the water turned on with a mixer tap style lever.

Am I the only one who thinks that sounds horrendously dangerous?

Not to mention the cost of keeping a tank of water permanently boiling.

But I'm surprised this doesn't break some safety law. What if you knocked the tap? What if a child used it? What if a visitor didn't realise it wasn't your normal tap?

  • It does sound intuitively dangerous. However, I work for an organisation helping children with a disability, and we have this kind of tap in the start-of-the-art kitchen they use for life skills - apparently it is much safer than lifting a kettle as many of the children struggle to use their hands - the tap bends to exactly above the cup to avoid spillages. Of course they don't use it unsupervised and only when it has been assessed to be safe for them. Interesting that in this case it is the safer option though!

I would love one of these. The taps had a safety lock on so they can't be accidentally turned on and the spout is also insulated so it doesn't get hot to the touch and the tank is well insulated I beleive. if we had one we'd install it near but not over the sink so visiters dien't try to wash hands etc.

Boiling water is dangerous - at least this way kettle aren't being lifted and poured, there are no wires for kids to pull etc

  • My newly refitted office building has these in every kitchen. There is a safety button that has to be pressed at the same time before water will come out of the tap so they aren't dangerous, but they were horrendously expensive to buy and install, and break down regularly. I would rather just have a kettle!

In our church kitchen we've got a wall mounted urn that is kept on all day when the church halls are in use. No major safety features, just a lever that you pull downwards so it will dispense boiling water into your cup. The whole thing is just above the level of a childs face and though kids aren't supposed to go in the kitchen at all many mothers choose to ignore the very large notices about this and have their kids in with them. So I think that's very dangerous, in some ways this new gizmo sounds a lot better.
