This is getting more expensive by the day!! I think for the barbie/princess cake I am going to do I want to put fondant dress frills on the doll. I have watched numerous youtube videos so technically know how to do it! however there appears to be different ways of achieving it and i wanted the cheapest! there are frill cutters (which i never even knew existed) garrett ones which are round, or straight ones. Apart from the obvious difference do they both do the same thing. Can i make frills without spending a fiver?

Yes you can if you have normal or serrated circle cutters (maybe serrated isn't the right word here, but like for cutting out pastry I have wavy type edge circle cutters).
You can cut the circle for the bottom layers of the dress and build it up like in strips on the front of the dress. When you get higher up you can just slot the whole circle over the top of your cake / other icing.
If you have decreasing sizes in circles that will help to.
To create more of a ruffled edge, you need to thin out the icing on the outside edge of the circle with something thin and round (a thin rolling pin or the other end of a wooden spoon or pastry brush might work?) Just roll it over the wavy edge left and right and work your way along the piece of icing.
Hope that helps. Its kind of hard writing it down :rotfl: It makes much more sense in my head
