Background-checking for new jobs...

I know that the human resources department contact referees but who reads the references? Is it just the HR people or do they pass them on to the line manager etc?
Thank you!

That will entirely depend on the organisation - there are no 'rules'.
  • Whoever needs to. Depends on the management, managers and policies
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • In companies I've worked in then it has always been HR unless there is a problem in which case it may go to the hiring manager for their consideration of if the person is still wanted.

Partly depends on the size of the organisation: in a larger one you'd expect them to go to HR who may or may not pass them onto the dept manager. I do remember HR alerting my manager to the fact that an 'interesting' reference had been received for someone who'd not long joined our team, and had actually failed to turn up to work that day. As it happened, they were fine, just a bad fit with the previous employer.

  • Thanks Sue, that's what I thought. Not sure how I feel about everyone reading what's been written about me even if it's positive. It's a large organisation so hopefully will just be HR. :)

As recruiting manager, references have always either come direct to me, or forwadred to me by HR to confirm I am happy with them.
