time for a job change, any ideas

ive had a few employment issues lately, i work in care and although i love the job it frustrates the hell out of me, ive been working for a few companies over a good few years and all have been the same, no opportunity to progress and move up the chain, lots of questionable care providers who seem to be only out for themselves and certainly not the clients, and the awful pay and long hours. i was thinking perhaps its time for a change.

Ive done a few different things since ive been of working age, started working in the stockrooms in retail, moved to london to do a politics degree and did a research role for a political party but i dropped out as i found it hard away from home, trained in sound engineering for 3 years, then bumped into care. i just feel a bit like im floating around and i havent found my place yet in the working world

Id like to settle down in work, we have two children and my partner cares for our autistic daughter at home. i feel a bit like i cannot go back to studying as we wouldnt have any money and i dont want to rely on benefits. i know the job world is extremely limited at the moment so obviously i dont have too high expectations

any ideas?

  • Maybe a admin role within a social services setting. Get a feel of the services offered by local authority and use that as a way of moving into a support role of some kind? Tenancy support, community support etc. Or look at charities, they often need volunteers which could help you find your path - example befriending, appropriate adult, court support, youth work, CAB.
As someone who has taken many years not really knowing what I wanted to do until recently I feel your frustration. I wish i had known what I wanted when I was younger instead of falling into jobs. Careers advice or prospects website may help you define what you want.
    Good Luck!

Can you drive? Be a trade plater like me for a bit. It's the best/worst job on earth (depending what sort of day you're having), pay ain't great, it knackers you out, but you meet some great people and it's never boring.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

Did you enjoy any of these roles? I mean, if your family had been around you, would you have wanted to continue working in research? If the care job hadn't come along, would you have stuck with sound engineering?

I just wondered if life got in the way of the above going any further, or if you chose to stop where you did.

to be honest, sound engineering was my biggest passion. i loved it, creating, recording, tweaking. but then i had to no choice to find something else because there is just no work whatsoever in the sound engineering, especially where i live. i could maybe do some volunteering or look around for things, but it just doesnt pay, its not a stable job and money to provide for my kids

Have you looked at training to be a nurse? Depending on your outgoings, you might find that the funding available for this (plus some care work) would make this financially viable.
