Dental splint for TMJ

Options
Hello there,

I have been havign problems with my jaw locking up (has been partially locked for 3 months) and clicking and went to the maxilla-facial unit this week. They have given my a letter to give to my dentist with a recommendation that I have a soft bite splint to ease the tension in the muscles to allow further investigation to see if there is an underlying problem.

I've managed to register with a dentist (I hadn't moved dentists since I moved house) and spoke to them about it and booked an appointment in a couple of weeks. They said it was band 3 (?-£209).

My question is...will I have to pay this charge every time I have it replaced? I've read on t'interweb that people can sometimes chew their way through these soft ones pretty rapidly, so if I were outside of the two month window, would I have to pay again?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You could ask how much it would be privately.

I'm purely private (Don't do any NHS) and I would charge about £75 for a soft one.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

That would certainly make it easier to replace it if it wears out. I'll ask them at my appointment-thank you Toothsmith!
  • I have a similiar issue, and the hospital team recommended this but made it there, with the advice that my (private) dentist would have to make any replacements, which she has estimated would be about £50. So far I've had it about a year but it's not going to last much longer.
