Recycled black maxi/summer dress + gladiator sandals and some plastic snakes = Medusa (well, plus some make-up - that's my plan this year!)

I like the idea of a full length dress rather than a 'oh christ it just covers my bum' pre-made costume. Halloween is for looking classily evil not like coffin bait!

Go funny or clever- if you have stuffed toy cats sew them onto a t-shirt and go as !!!!! galore.

A really easy and effective costume is - use a big brimmed hat - an old sombrero back from spain is great, cover in green or blue tissue and then make tendrils to go around the brim, wear green and blue clothes and you are a jelly fish.

If you are a bit podgy - wear black clothes and a black shirt on backwards, cut a dog collar from a white plastic bottle, and do your hair like dawn french, chuck in a big cardigan and go as the vicar of dibley

Pirates are dead easy, baggy trousers or ragged cut offs, a bandanna, a big scarf for your waist, flowing gypsy style blouse, make a garish waistcoat from curtain material and sew flounces on to anything you can, make a cutlass from a bit of card and paint on a moustache with eye liner.

If you have a good figure, !!!!! cat using a black leotard, tights and make a tail and ears, paint your face.

You can go as bride of frankenstein if you have an old wedding dress or if you can mock one up using nets, then it is just back-conbed hear and death face make up.

a 1940's factory worker, borrow some navy overalls, tie a polka dot bandanna around your hair (knotted at the front), do some 40's make-up, remember the bright red lips and nails.

wesnesday adams, dress all in black, leggings and a black tunic dress, with clock long sleeved t-short, add a crisp collar and cuffs and a big crucifix, hair in pigtails and white make-up, borrow a baby doll and strip it and pull it head off, carry both parts around with you,

Rag doll - knee length skirt (bright colour) short sleeved whit shirt buttioned to the chin, floppy bow, braces, real or made, knee lenfth sock and either make hair from pink or blue wool or buy one of those garish wigs from the pound shop

Made myself a 'Claire from Heroes' cheerleader costume one year, made my friend the alternative costume she wears in the series too. Mine was a combination of a homemade skirt and a 'frankentop' (cheap Matalan white v-neck, arms hacked off and replaced with the sleeves from a red charity shop jumper). Fabric paint for the logo, cheap legwarmers and pompoms, and I had some plain trainers to wear along with it.
I made my friend's from scratch so it was just the cost of materials, and (lots of!) time.
Then made fake blood for the gory 'Ahh, Silas is here to kill me!" effect (because, like someone said, halloween is about the scariness not sluttiness of a costume!)
