Tax deductions for Mileage

Hi All,
I have a quick question regarding Tax Deductions for Mileage and Food allowance.
Many of my fellow contractors are working through and umbrella company and they get the 2 years of reduced tax based on mileage and food allowances.
I looked at umbrella companies and it seems that it would cost to much. But I wanted to know if I could also claim the same allowances but self submit?
Or would this mean going though self-employment and overall it being a headache.
I commute 26 miles a day to my place of work, But I am a contractor for a company that is based in another part of the country.
Is this not worth the hassle in the long run?
