Ugh. Just got credit report for a new job, shows default = no job?

I have a default on my account from ~18mths ago with orange for £380 - someone stole my phone and used it and I was/am stuck with the bill. IIRC I sent orange a letter offering to pay what I could at the time, I think it was £200 to settle the account, but they refused and wanted the whole amount, which I just couldn't and still can't afford.
Anyway, new job offer is only valid once credit checks are complete, is this going to make the company not hire me do you think?
(( if I got this job I'd be able to afford to pay it in 2mths!!!
My credit is otherwise fine, except 1 late payment when RBS effed up, but going to write to orange about that

Well, it all depends on the company policy, but I would hope that they would contact you to query this if it was an issue for them, and give you a chance to explain the situation. It's not like you have a string of credit card defaults or CCJs. They've already made an offer to you, so I would think it would be easier for them to speak to you about it than go through the process of calling in their second choice for the job. Thank you, I'm just worried because they won't do the checks until I start, which means that...well, I will have to quit my current job, and then what if they're like "oh you can't work for us because of this" and then I have no job?! Ugh.0

Might be worth a call to their HR dept (if they're big enough to have one?), at least that way, if the worst comes to the worst, you'll still have your current post. Being proactive shows you take it seriously, and it will clear out the extra worry which you really don't need right now.
It all depends why they want a credit check - I guess they just want to protect themselves from fraudsters and the fatally disorganised, not penalise people who've been victims of crime.A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone - Thoreau0
