Google Adwords/keyword selection/competition

Sorry - I know that this isn't particularly relevant, but I know that there are a few people on here who make money from websites and i'm looking for a little advice regarding keyword/phrase selection for SEO.

Its for my "day job" website, i'm about to design some new products and have been researching various keywords and phrases in my Adwords account to see which ones would be best to optimise the pages for.

Several phrases come up with high competition (even with very low local or global search figures), the others only come up with a dash - so no figures at all. Does this mean no-one ever searches for these phrases? Or just that the competition is so low that it doesn't register with Google?

  • I think maybe its that low it doesnt register. Also, make sure you select exact instead of broad on the left hand side.
  • Thanks Bigbase - will go back and check that. Struggling a bit as every phrase either has high competition or no data at all. no middle ground that I can find!

It means there's not enough data for the keyword search either locally or globally, but don't ignore that.

Some people seem to make the mistake of wanting to promote items with medium or high competition and that's wrong. I only ever promote items which have either low competition or limited data using the free Google keyword tool and have enjoyed reasonable success with this approach.

  • Thanks Shmeeko69, I knew that it was best to avoid high competition phrases, but as there are no medium or low phrases that are relevant to the product I wasn't sure if it was worth trying to compete with the high ones or to just stick with the low/no data ones.

Unfortunately my industry is very specific and highly competitive so it pretty tough to work up the search engine rankings!

It's always better to be on page one of big G for a keyword phrase which gets 500 searches a month than, page two for a phrase which gets 10,000.

The vast majority of people only ever look at page one on Google, so choose you keywords and phrases very wisely, as it will make a big difference to your results.
