Self employment...

I've been working for a company that told me that I need to declare myself as self employed yet I was doing this alongside a full time job at the time.
I started working for the company about 6 months ago and my hours working for the company have been minimal.
Some weeks I could work no hours at all then the next I could have done 12 hours, all dependant on my shifts at the other job.

I hadn't had the chance to look into declaring myself as self employed as I had the full time job anyway and was unsure about how I would go about it.

I am unfortunately no longer in full time employment with the company that I was with before and I have been continuing just doing a few hours at the self employed job each week although they're cutting right back on staff so I doubt they'll need me for many more shifts now.

What should I do?
Do I register as self employed now, even though I may or may not be getting any more shifts from the self employed position?
I can't even remember the date that I first started my job there about 6 months ago...

It's quite important that you work out what date this was: can you do it from payments? Because if you started after 5 April 2012 then you've got an extra year before you have to worry about this.

It would also help to know how much you've earned via self employment last tax year (if you did) and this tax year.

If it's minimal and not ongoing, then I think (and the experts will correct me if I'm wrong) that you could just phone HMRC and say that you need to do self-assessment because of some extra income.
