I want a career.

Good evening.
As the thread title states, I'd like a career.
I left school with 9 a-c gcses and went straight to my local college doing a plumbing apprenticeship. I attended for around 18 months completing all of my written/theory work & exams. The last few months were my final assessments on site. Unfortunatly the company that employed me went under and I was unable to complete my NVQ. After 6 months of no luck finding another employer I signed on.
A few months of signing on, I decided to put the plumbing on hold as I knew it was a bad time, so I decided to go for a complete change. I began training as a teaching assistant in a local primary school. I was doing my NVQ through my local council, and again due to restructures the funding was cut and I was unable to complete (although I do have all my certificates with different parts completed).
I almost straight away got myself a job delivering food for my local fast food pizza. I was there about 16 months before I got myself a new job in a factory. A little bit more skilled and not as mind numbing as delivering pizzas. At £10 an hour, I was reasonably happy.
However as with everything I have done, the company is now restructuring and 28 staff will go. Unfortunatly I'm still in my 6 month probation which finishes just as the company will start making redundancies (end of October) so I'm assuming I just won't be offered a contract.
Even if I did (I'd obviously take it), I'd like to build an actual career for self.
I'm certaintly not work shy and will give anything a go.
What do you guys suggest in reading for career options/ideas?
I've had a quick search, but really don't know what I want to do.
Apologies for the long post.
Thanks.

It all depends on what you want to do. Is there anything in particular that interests you ? or that you're good at. I have been working in the utility sales industry for 10 years since leaving school. Not what I ever wanted to do, but I am good at it and it keeps my family.
My local council and local library are forever offering free seminars and training course to help people get on a career ladder.
Maybe visit your local council or JobCentre for further information.0 -
Thanks for the swift reply.
I've never really known what I've wanted to do as such. And the stuff I've enjoyed, it's never worked out.
I don't think I could attend the job centre again, I don't mean to be rude but I received no help what so ever from them.
Thanks.0 -
Hi it might be worth having a look on the national careers service website, there are quite a few tests you can do which might point you in a direction you've not considered."It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice." :T0

The job centre aren't careers advisors, all they are there to do is make sure your pulling your weight to find a job. There is the next step site who you could register with and do the series of questions on the site, it can give you ideas what you could do as a job.0 -
Is there anything to stop you carrying on with the teaching? Have you considered going to university then on to a PGCE?0
