Contact lenses online

I've started wearing contacts (monthly) a few months ago and I signed up to the boots direct debit. I pay about £40 per 3 months about which includes solution. They are the boots monthly premium which I think is the Cibavision Air Optix.

I have 3 months supply at the moment and my DD starts in Oct for my lenses to arrive in December.

I haven't really been wearing them as much as I thought so I would prefer to go for dailies as I think this would be cheaper for me. I have my prescription, and I think I can probably get them cheaper than I do from Boots. Can anyone recommend me a good place to get some?

  • You can't just buy dailies, as your prescription is for monthlies. You'll need to go to an optician (either back to Boots or wherever you fancy) and get re-fitted with dailies and issued with a new prescription.

If you go back to Boots sooner rather than later, they'll be keen to keep you on DD so should point you in the direction of something fairly inexpensive.

Of course you can still shop around! Internet sites are nearly always cheaper, for all the usual reasons, but bear in mind you'll need to pay for aftercare appointments at an opticians to keep the prescription valid. This isn't generally too expensive if you have no problems and only need to attend routine appointments, but if you have problems, or an infection or something, you'll need a fair few appointments.
"Most of the people ... were unhappy... Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy." -- Douglas Adams

I thought my prescription was just the type of lens I need. I don't think they even asked if I wanted monthlies or dailies before they gave me it. Can't really remember. Thanks for the reply and I have copied my thread over to the contact lens thread.
  • I started wearing glasses in March and the contact from about May - I play a lot of tennis and the glasses were just a distraction. As I only wear the lenses occasionally I am on the Boots DD scheme at £14 per month which gets me 30 lenses every 3 months. At the moment the lenses are stacking up a bit, but I'm on the min frequency. One plus (maybe other schemes also have this?) is you get 50% off glasses, etc. and supposedly 10% off Boots own brands on other products. I gues the question there is are Boots own brands still over 10% more expensive generally than their competitors? Superdrug? Can't help thinking that these DD schemes must make money, but they are so appealing when starting on the less-blurry road to vision correction!
  • If you wanted cheaper monthly lenses I would recommend ASDA opticians. I get my eyes tested in Specsavers but then buy my lenses from the ASDA opticians website. I use Air Optix Aqua. You can get three months of lenses for £24, or for £28.50 if you include solution and there's no charge for the basic delivery, which I've always found to be quick. Occassionally I'll see lenses for cheaper online but once the required amount of solution is added the other options end up being more expensive. If you decide to go for dailies I'd also receommend having a look at the prices from ASDA. I used to buy my daily lenses from them too.
