Post Office Insurance: Worth it?

Hello!
The screen on my phone recently cracked and I need to send it off to my insurance company. I went in to ask for a padded envelope today and the cashier asked whether I'd like insurance when I send it off.
Is this really necessary? I sort of assumed that as I was paying for a service they had to take due care and be held accountable to any damages. If I damaged customer property at my job I or the Company would be held accountable, so why not at the Post Office? Is this not the case?
Anyway, I thought I might as well check as my phone is an expensive model, and I really don't want to risk it getting lost in transit.
Thank you.

you mean Royal Mail
not really sure of your point.
do you think RM have limitless liability for a 50p stamp?
you buy insurance for your protection
Standard post covers up to £46
for over that value, you need Specia delivery0 -

I presumed that when I pay for their service I may already have some sort of insurance cover in place to protect my phone. Therefore I wanted to check if I'm right, because if I'm wrong then I will consider the insurance. That was my point.
I never made any assumption of the sort that RM has a limitless liability.
Anyway, thank you for the answer. Clarified it to some extent.0 -
I think I would take out insurance for the phone if it was expensive.
Normally anything I send through the post isn't likely to be worth much and certainly not my antique phone
but if it would be more expensive to replace than the cost of insurance then I would pay the extra. 0
