A month without pay? Help!!!

Hi guys, I wonder if you could put my mind at ease please?

I work as an IT Technician in a school, originally Notts County Council, now an Academy. when I first started I didn't get paid for two months, (Work a month in advance?) I started on the 5th of September, didn't get paid till the 22nd of October, in 2008.

I got a new job yesterday a different school, not yet an Academy so still under county council, and I am handing my notice in today my old place. My official date of leaving will be the 23rd of Oct, and I'll be starting at my new job on the 24th.

So I am really worried I'm going to be stuck a month without pay if my new place does the same and doesn't pay me till the 22nd (That's usual county council pay day.) of December. This will be a nightmare at the run up to Christmas.

Can anyone tell me if this is what I'm to expect, or how I can go about asking without sounding rude? And if I worked a month in advance at my old place, surely I should get paid for the month I did in 2008 in November as they owe it me? I'm so confused.

Won't there still be a month in hand from your old job to tide you over?

  • Yes, you should get paid for the month you are owed by your current employer at the end of November.

Why not clarify with them, and put your mind at rest? Send them something like this:

When I started work with you in Sept 2008 it was explained to me that I work a month in hand, and indeed I did not receive my first pay from you until the end of November 2008. My last working day will be 23 October - could you please confirm that my final pay will be paid at the end of November?
