Tax code confusion

Hi All,

I am not sure if this is in the right place,

I have had a company demo through work for about 8 years, I work for a car dealership so don't have a particular car assigned to me as such but drive the demonstrator vehicles so pay company car tax.

Everything has always been fine that I am aware but 2 months ago I had the letter changing my tax code which isn't too unusual as I can sometimes earn very different amounts from one year to the next, it was something like 825L? I called the inland revenue as I didn't think the new tax code would be allowing me to pay enough tax. They advised me it was wrong and when my employer send my P11D off they had informed them I no longer have a company car, they said they would change my code back to 325L or something like that.

A letter came through over the weekend saying code has been changed to 626L and there is more money there than should be in my pay today.

I appologise for my codes not being very accurate, I am not very good at these. Does anyone know what I should be doing?

Many thanks,

Louise

  • Hello Louise

I would suggest that your first step should be to obtain a copy of the P11d from your employer to see whether the car is still included and if so, at what value. You can then establish whether the codes are substantially correct.
  • My employers don't seem to know, despite most of the work force having use of the company demos.

When I spoke to the accountant at first he just said he thought the code of the 828L must not have anything to do with a car.
