Credit check problems when signing up with T-Mobile

Not sure if this entirely relevant to this board but it seems like the most relevant place to post, so:

I tried to start a new account with T-Mobile today, but I failed their credit check. I find this strange as I've already got a phone contract with O2, have a credit card with a £4k+ credit card limit that I pay off in full each month (albeit with one payment missed a couple of months back because I was moving house), had a £10k loan approved a couple of years ago that I've now paid off in full, etc. Basically, I'm a good bet credit-wise.

T-Mobile have directed me to Equifax to get a credit report and to see if I can change anything that will enable me to get a contract with T-Mobile. I've got in touch with Equifax and now have to send through copies of identity documents - a bit of an inconvenience as I've just moved and am waiting for utility bills etc to change into my name, but hey.

I'm curious as to why I've been turned down for credit, though, as was the guy I spoke to at T-Mobile. I seem to remember reading about the address you live at counting towards your credit rating, whether or not any bad credit registered to that address was your fault or not. Is this the case? Is there anything else that could have caused the problems I'm having? And can anyone suggest any possible solutions, outside of going to Equifax?

  • addresses dont get bad credit people do,you say you moved 2 months ago are you on the electoral register at new address yet?
  • Thanks for such a quick reply :)

No, I'm still to register with the electoral roll. Will doing that ease things up with the credit check?

As far as credit checks are concerned not being on the electoral role at the address you have given is a killer for obvious reasons.

That'll, more than likely, be the reason

Register as soon as you can and wait a month for the credit agencies to update.

    Hope that helps

  • Hi

I have just been turned down for a contract with T-Mobile too. I also have a contract just due to end with 3 and have never missed a payment with them for over 5 years!

I am currently in a DMP, have been for the past 3 years, and have also never missed a payment. In fact I received a letter the other day to inform me that one of my debts has now been paid off in full.

Go figure. Oddly enough though I have just moved in to a new rental property too (3 months ago)

The main thing is you dmp, you also shouldnt be applying for credit while on it
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • Thanks, everyone, for some great advice. I'll start things off with getting on the electoral roll tomorrow, and try again with T-Mobile on October 29th to give time for everything to filter through to the credit agencies :)
