TVL intimidation and threats of prison!!

Options
Hello MSE fans.

Please excuse me if this thread is in the wrong forum, however, I require some advice on what my next step is...

I have been talking to TV Licensing and a "manager" named "Craig" assuming that this is his real name, and they are demanding that I pay over £18 a month when I had:

  • Budgeted for £14.55/mo, and:
  • had this agreement with one of his collegues.

It appears that they have reneged on this agreement and have now resorted to threats of prison, and baliffs, along with court in order to intimidate me into paying what I cant afford. Who do these goons thing they are to issue threats like this, which is causing me an awful lot of stress and anxiety. I thankfully recorded my calls to them using an app available for Android. Needless to say, they did not want me recording them, something to hide perhaps??

I tried for the last 5 days to strike a deal, but this guy is so hard headed and with him, I feel like I am trying to beat blood out of a stone, he just isn't interested...

I would appreciate some guidence on what I should do next (except writing to them as I feel it will get me nowhere).

Thanks in advance.

Thomas.

  • In a nut shell no you can't go to prison for not paying a TV Licence, I am not 100% certain, but should they take this to court, you can be sent to prison for not paying whatever the courts impose on you.
Doing some indepth analysis of my outgoings it's a real eye opener!

I find if I keep paying by card and keeping the receipts insisting that I have them from the shop, then itemising them when I get home on excel makes my life a whooole lot easier!
  • As far as I am aware, the standard payments for direct debit for a TV licence are either £24-ish if you are just starting to pay by DD, or £12-ish if you are an existing DD customer. The first is so that TV Licencing get the full cost of the licence for one year, plus half the cost for the following year. When payments adjust to £12 a month, it is because you have already paid six months of the licence. The licence is therefore paid six months in advance and six months in arrears from the second year of paying by DD.
