Wrong tax code BR I only have one employment

I have received a PAYE coding notice for 4/12- 4/13 through the mail today saying my tax code is BR
I have one job that I have been in compntinious employment for 15 years so I can't understand why my tax code is BR surely this means I have no taxable allowance
Could any one give me any advise if this is wrong I have no other taxable income ie pension car etc

I will call into my pay office tommorow and see what they say but was wondering why it could be BR

Thank you wanderer2012

  • Hello Wanderer 2012,

Yes that definitely sounds like a mistake has been made.

You should call HMRC directly yourself as that way your coding will be corrected and issued faster to your Payroll Department rather than you possibly having to wait for them to call HMRC on your behalf.
    Happy to help if required!

    Kind regards
  • Hi Wanderer

I was entirely self-employed for a few years, but started 9 to 5 employment a couple of years back whilst still freelancing in my spare time. Because of the freelance work they put me onto BR, which meant I didn't get any tax allowance on my employment earnings. The allowance was made against my freelance earnings when I submitted my freelance earnings to the Inland Revenue for the previous year.

Sounds as if the IR think you have earnings coming in from elsewhere, so you need to get in touch with them ASAP if that's not the case.

Hope that helps point you in the right direction.

If you have only just received your coding notice then the code will apply from the next salary payment due after the date of the notice.

Depending on when your next salary is due and how fast HMRC act you may well have the correct coding issued in time which will replace the BR coding.

  • I have just got off the phone to them and they think I have a second job as I started a new posting same employer HM FORCES but different pay office. No idea why they have done this as I have had numerous postings in my army career,
I have to go into the pay office and get them to sort it apparently so looks like will be taxed 20% On next months salary great,
Thanks everyone for the advice hopefully the pay clerks should be able to sort it
