The trouble for all banks is that Basle III is making them into businesses that are fundamentally unprofitable.

Who picked up the tab in the US for all that profitable inter investment bank trading?

    The taxpayer.

People that shorted subprime mortgage CDO's along with the shares of investment banks were the only winners.

The man in the street wasn't even allowed to play in the game.

The faster this 'forced' deleveraging happens, the deeper the damage to Europe's economy will be.

The quickest way to deleverage is to bankrupt those who invested wrongly. The quicker its over, the sooner we can stop circling a pile of crap trying not to step in it and move onto something worth discussing, maybe business that grows naturally with no subsidys and special rules just competion

I agree and this is really all about how much risk we are prepared to allow banks to take now the implicit guarantees have become explicit.

My belief is that banks are being throttled by forthcoming regulations which are well meaning but also highly destructive.
