As much as I hate to say it, as they're turning the hotel trade into another Tesco, but Travelodge have many locations in Edinburgh and although fairly bog standard, they are good value, especially the centrally located ones where its within walking distance of the city centre.
I know both these chains are cheap and usually fine I wonder if its poss to recommend something not too far off in price that has some character or " soul"?
I've lost count of the number of times I've had a local/independent hotel in Edinburgh take my booking at one (reasonable) rate, then just before I'm due, they contact me and inform me of a "problem" with the booking and either offer me a room at a vastly inflated price - sometimes as high as 600% more or an "alternative" room in some vermin infested hovel or a guesthouse out in the sticks.
This has happened just too many times for it to be genuine or just my bad luck.
However I have only once had any major chain try to pull this fast one on me since I switched to them. Mostly they have been exemplary, if standardised and basic - Which is fine by me as there is plenty more character in Edinburgh to occupy me.
