Oz Debt

I recently received a call from an Australian Debt company having left the country over 10yrs ago. They claim the bank I was with when there recently went to court and subsequently passed on £1000 debt to them. What may have happened is I've transferred the money out of the account but not closed it and either a transaction fee or a small transaction has taken place after this and over the years they have charged account and interest fees and this is how the debt has built up. I have heard nothing from the bank since I left the country. The debt company had my parents number and through them obtained my mobile number.
They claim if I don't pay it they will pass it on to lawyers in the UK and also mention that it may effect my UK credit rating but I don't think this is true.
Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks for the response. I don't think the Statute Barred applies as I understand it is 6 years since you either acknowledge the debt or made a payment towards it and I have done neither.
Is this correct?0 -
think its 5 in aussie land. however the debt over there can not be registered on your credit file here. they could try to chase it in the uk. but its very expensive to do so. and very unlikely over 1k. maybe worth checking your aussie credit file. if you were in the uk then they should not have been allowed to go to court in Australia.0
