Uniform=less than min wage

Someone I know has just started a new job in a chain of clothing retailers.

They are required to buy clothes from stock to wear, they must be current season. Even with the discount, in my mind this equates to less than min wage as she is buying the uniform from the employer from the salary they are paying her.

Is this right? As an employer, I supply my staff uniform and they are not expected to pay. Is it because there is no logo?

    in all clothing chain I have worked I was expected to buy clothes that were current season (only three all high street)...

    i got 75% discount in one, and 50% in another... (the third you could only buy clothes on certain dates an got maybe 90% off - but they had to be uniform)...

    It may take down her wage but she will be getting clothes that she can wear out of it, at the first two stores i was able to buy anything I wanted as long as it was fr me, and never had to wear it at work... (the 75% off store only allowed us to buy £200 worth of clothes a month but it did carry over and then each year it got wiped clean and we got double discount twice a year after he the big sales in case our uniforms had been in the sale racks)...

    if she worked in a junior position in an office she would be on similar money and would have to buy all her own clothes full price, and they would generally have to be smarter i.e. no funky tee shirts etc.
