First thing I would start with is: does she like yellow gold or silver jewellery. If she weears a lot of yellow gold then the engagement ring should be the same. If she prefers silver coloured jewellery, then white gold/platinum/palladium would be best.
2nd- do you have any idea whether she would prefer solitaire (one diamond) or more than one diamond.
You can get totally bogged down in cuts/clarity/colour/carats. Cut is the shape- would she like a round cut? Emerald cut (rectangular) pear cut (pear shaped). Colour- get as white as possible. Clarlty- the less inclusions the better. Apparently. I say apparently my engagement ring came from an antique shop so although we know the cut and the carat weight we have no idea on the colour or the clarity. It is white enough for me and I can't see any inclusions so as far as I'm concerned it's inclusion free and pure white! :rotfl:
But my 100% honest suggestion is this- buy a cheap temporary ring. Propose with that- and then shop together for the 'real' ring. This is what my husband did and we enjoyed the shopping together. I got exctally the kind of ring I wanted and I still wear the cheap temporary ring on my right hand everyday too
Also takes a big chunk of pressure off of you to get it totally right

ps The rule of thumb is that the engagement ring should cost roughly the same as a months wage. In America- it's 3 months wage but it was a jewellery company that started that 3 months rule to get people to spend more! :rotfl:0

My now husband bought my ring from the Diamond Centre in the Jewellery Quarter, and we we went back there to get our wedding rings. We've since used them for various other things as well and always felt we got really good advice and value for money.
Good luck with the proposal, let us know how it goes!0
