Can I claim?

I work as a cook in a Bar/restaurant on basic wage of £6.08 for 16 hours a week - sometimes maybe a couple of hours more if we are busy

I supply my trousers, tops and aprons - work pays for the logos to be embroidered

I wash my own uniform

How do I go about claiming tax relief on them when I dont actually earn enough to even pay tax? So far this year Ive not paid a penny tax and only 12.30 in NI

  • If you have not paid any tax you cannot be repaid that unpaid tax.

Well I kind of got that bit :rotfl:

Just seems a tad unjust that because Im so lowly paid I get no help towards the cost of my trade where others do via the tax man

Not like I can wear me chequered trousers, safety shoes and aprons and tops out to town or a night out, they are clothes are are bought especially for work and actually do cost a hefty chunk of my income in purchase cost and upkeep ( all have to be washed separate from other clothes )

If it's part of your contract that you have to wear them I can't see why your employer doesn't pay for them, both to be purchased and cleaned.
Employers these days seem to expect so much now that there are no unions to protect the workers.

Employer supplies one change of clothing - and believe me you can only wear that change the once. So we have had to buy the rest and we have to pay our own laundering costs and because of the stench of them - they really cannot go into a with " good clothes" ( the smell of cooking fat lingers and transfer)
