How to bake a flat cake (ie don't have to slice the top off to level it!)

Options
I don't really bake large cakes, just the occasional muffins but this tip may help those who do and need to take the tops off to make their cake level before icing etc.

But you will still have to cut some off so that it sits flat.

  • My mum used to make loads of cakes for weddings, birthdays etc. (and sell them)

It was a hobby more than a money making thing. She would cut the cake flat and my dad would eat the bits she cut off - he really enjoyed that job :T

I just scoop a little hole out of the filling in the middle so that it's at a lower level to the outside before it goes in the oven.
  • But that's the best bit! (sorry OP, just had to say it!)

Yes, but it doesnt matter if it is a little uneven, the weight of the cake will make the bottom find its level.:)

I normally just make plain cakes for us so I'm not really bothered if they rounded on the top but I think I'll give this tip a try next time I bake just to see if it works.

I wonder if strips of damp newspaper would work? Would save you having to cannibalize a tea towel. I already use newspaper round Christmas cakes which are in the oven for hours so it might be worth a go....
