Self assessment letter

I started doing Avon about a month ago and I registered for being self employed. I filled in a form a week or some back so I don't have to pay for nat insurance as I'm employed but today I've received a letter saying I'm going to be asked to fill in a tax return? Why? I've only just started Avon and earnt £18 ish? I didn't earn anything self employed in the last tax year? I presumed I wouldnt have to do any form filling in till next year!

Did it specifically say you have to complete a return for the 2011/2012 tax year or just advise you that you now have to complete returns. If the latter then you will receive one next April/May to complete for the 2012/13 tax year.

I got one of these letters soon after registering as a sole trader many years: it almost certainly relates to the tax year April 6th 2012 to April 5th 2013 - the current tax year.

You can submit the return any time between late April 2013 and Jan 31st 2014, which gives you plenty of time to learn the rules and register to do it online.
