Working for French Company in UK taxation help required

My son has just started working for a French company with an office in the UK. Hehas just got his first pay statement and is being paid in Euro's but is being taxed as a French citizen. He has been charged French taxes and has had no NI insurance deducted.

His deductions appear to be more than they would have been had he been taxed as a UK employee.

We are looking for advice as to how he stands regarding UK pension and how he can be taxed as per UK rules if possible.

There is also the fact tha he runs a website based company in the UK and needs to register as self employed as well.

I know this may be a rather specialised area but any advice as to the way to proceed or accountants that specialise in this sort of matter would be appreciated

  • Hi,

I work as a Tax adviser and have dealt with clients in similar situations- most accountants should be able to help with this. Just be warned though this is something that is more likely to be able to be sorted out through his tax return rather than through his payroll dept.

As he is going to be registering as self-employed in any case he will need to file a Tax Return anyway so sorting out the Tax Deducted on his pay should just be part and parcel of that process- how long has he been working self-employed for? He would need to register within 3 months of starting- again the accountant can help with this.

I won't go into too much detail as a lot will depend on further details that the accountant will ask for but normally a credit will be given for any foreign tax deducted on income which is fully taxable in the UK.

Best thing to do is get an appointment with a local accountant and go through the situation with them and then get some quotes. I would tend to try a medium-sized firm but have a look in your local directory and see who's around!

    Hope that helps!

  • Oh just to add- he may need to still talk to his employer after seeing the accountant as they will also need to be paying employer's NI as well as collecting Employee's NI - but best thing to do is see if you can get an appointment with an accountant to go through it all.
